Indigo Dyeing on Beautiful Kauai

My joy for several weeks last month was teaching Shibori Indigo Dyeing on the beautiful island of Kauai in Hawaii. It was such a privilege and I'm thrilled that they want me to come back.  I took lots of pictures to share with you!

We landed at the beautiful Kauai airport and saw a very colorful rooster.

We soon realized they were all over the island! Most were quite beautiful and the one above was the prettiest. We also saw baby and teenager chickens and discovered that the roosters do not know when it's dawn. They just crowed all night and day!

My Shibori Indigo Dyeing classes were hosted by Maile, owner of Vicky’s Fabrics in Kapaa. She has a wonderful shop and was a great organizer for the classes. If you're ever on Kauai, Vicky's Fabrics is a must-see!

I taught two 3-day classes with enthusiastic ladies who did some amazing work.

They had a wonderful time learning, designing and Shibori Indigo dyeing beautiful scarves and lots of fabric.

This Mandala folded length of fabric turned out particularly striking!

I loved working with these ladies and seeing their smiles as they dipped their hands in the Indigo blue and delightedly revealed their gorgeous pieces.

There were a couple of fun surprises during the classes! This luscious bouquet was given to me by one of my students and Joanne wore a cute dress she had made from my Moda Shibori fabrics

After the classes were over, my husband and I did several excursions and were “on vacation”. The coast of Kauai is incredibly beautiful!

Our trip to Waimea Canyon, known as the Grand Canyon of Hawaii was spectacular!

This waterfall in the canyon just took our breath away.

Our dinner cruise to the Na Pali Coast was delicious and amazing. Our server was an animal protector for the kitties of the island and had a very cute tattoo.

The Na Pali Coast is very beautiful and very remote. There are no roads to get there, so you must travel by boat. Imagine taking a boat to this rocky cave!

Another stop for us was the Kilauea Light House which is a Wildlife Bird Sanctuary on the north coast of the island. This cute little bird is a member of the Tanager family.

The Hanapepe Swinging Bridge was another highlight of our vacation time. It is a historic bridge still used by the people of Hanapepe to cross the river. As you can see by the signs behind my husband, it is very narrow and only one person is allowed across it at a time.

We also enjoyed seeing the Kauai Coffee Company and the Spouting Horn. Kauai is known as the Garden Island and everywhere we went was wonderfully colorful and so beautiful! This pretty little spot was outside the home of our host.
